After the cold windy day last Saturday for Club fixtures, everyone was hoping for better weather, and after a bit more of the same, the day turned out to be quite pleasant except that the wind periodically eased and then freshened throughout the day.
The field was 51 (41 men and 10 ladies), fewer than expected but with the number of players unavailable for one reason or another, it was a respectable number and the field flowed easily except for a couple of clashes at the 4/14th Tees. The Shotgun start worked well with a change to the Tees used at hit-off.
It was good to see Hattonvale so green. For the most part, the Greens were great to putt on, even though reading the line fooled many players. With the preferred lie ‘through the green’ errant shots were rewarded with a reasonable lie. No mention will be made of the Committee member who let his group hit off the wrong 2nd Tee.
Laurie always has tea and coffee available before play, and with biscuits as well, some of the discomfort of the morning cold was lessened. As usual, the hot Hattonvale lunch was again topnotch.
Scoring was never going to be high with the weather conditions but there are always winners and today they were Frank Akes, Maurie Murtagh and Gaye Geldard. Not so with the Pin Shots where four of the seven put out for the day were claimed by members of the Skinner family. The highlight of the day was the Eagle scored by John Hafner on the 12th hole, which rolled in while the group in front was still on the Green.
Photos.
1. Why couldn’t we have had a blue sky like that last week and all these players would have had a game?
2. The local lads made sure Glen and Miguel hit off the right Tees. Look at the condition of the Greens and surrounds.
3. John shows the style which yielded him an Eagle on the 12th today.
4. Bob was actually quite happy. He just wanted to get on with his meal.
The next game will be at Karana Downs on Monday 19th May. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun start.
