Event 9 – Gatton

As expected, after driving through some patches of fog on the way to the Course, it turned out to be a fine day ideally suited to ensuring a pleasant day’s golf. For the third game in a row, players all arrived in good time and play got under way 10 minutes early.

The field was 91 players (77 men and 12 ladies), five fewer than last year’s high of 96 even though the ladies numbers were an increase of 2, and there was one renewal of membership. Seven new shirts were distributed as new members continue to join most of their fellow members in wearing the reasonably priced Association shirt.

The Course has benefitted from the recent good rainfall with an extensive grass cover, though Preferred Lie would have proved beneficial to many players in some areas, particularly on seven of the back nine holes. The Greens were mowed on the morning of the game for which players were thankful, but they often struggled with putting to some of the Pin placements following weekend Pennants games.

The club had the urn boiling on our arrival and a chicken hamburger and chips lunch was available as well as ‘over the counter’ snacks.

Thirty-seven was the best score of the day and there had to be three countbacks to determine that Errol O’Farrell was the winner of his first Division 1 trophy. Barry Murphy’s 36 and Shirley Luhrman’s 35 were enough to make them clear winners in the other two Divisions. Paul Harbers thought he had fixed his battery problem until it only lasted 17 holes and had to be pushed the final hole.

Photos.

1. Keep those hands still and try again John.

2. Wrong Fairway, trees blocked the target and about 150 metres from the Green, and that’s where the ball landed and sat.

3. Has his hat on today and now he seems to be having eye trouble.

4. With the practice he’s had, he’s getting good at these shots.

5. Is it too painful to watch or is it a foregone conclusion?

The next game will be at Rosewood on Monday 8th May. The following games will be at Laidley on Monday 22nd May and Warwick on Monday 29th May. The Timesheet for Warwick will be out at Rosewood. All three games will be 8.30am shotgun starts.
