Event 9 – Gailes

After having a Sweepstakes competition the last two years, it was a relief to send players out without the worry of rain before play, and in fact, except for some very brief indications that we were in for a light shower, the game proceeded without any rain at all.

Early indication were that we would have 100 plus players, but the final starting number was 99 (82 men and 17 ladies). All arrived on time, and we were able to move to our Tees at 8.15am. Quite a number hadn’t played here before while a few indicated that their previous game here was at least 15 years ago.

The Course was in excellent condition from Tee to Green and it was a pleasure to play from well grassed Fairways. The same could not be said for the Greens. They were the least playable of those encountered on our District Courses this year, where many Clubs ensure their Greens are mowed for us on game day. The Club indicated a water problem, but the edges of several holes were badly frayed and on three or four holes the flags would not stand vertically in the hole.

Gaye and Barry Geldard made sure that the Urn was boiling for a pre-game Tea or Coffee and also provided the biscuits. Thanks so much, and so good to see you back with us Barry. With no caterers, the usual snacks were available, and in particular players who ordered sandwiches agreed that they were the best encountered for quite a long while.

Local lad, John Hafner, easily took out the Division 1 trophy, while Dorothy Pearson had no trouble slipping over the fence from Wolston Park to win the ladies event. One of our newer members, Peter Smollen, just held off Graham Wilson and Bryce Fletcher for his trophy. Great shot Des Hastie to get to within 236cm of the Pin on Hole 17.

Photos.

1. Gailes is a very scenic Course, but hasn’t it got some Bunkers!

2. Please explain Rhonda.

3. This shot wasn’t posed. Rob chose to play sideways and made a top shot back to the Fairway.

4. Bryce didn’t know it, but if this putt went in, he would have won the Division 2 trophy.

The next game will be at Gatton on Monday 9th May. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun Start.
