Event 8 – Gailes

The second game in a row with fine weather at Gailes, though with about one hole to play the clouds looked threatening, but did not deliver. It was good to get a game on a dry Course after the interrupted play on most of our venues last week because of the very heavy rainfall and flooding.

Early indications were that we would have close to 120 players, but the final starting number was 110 (93 men and 17 ladies), which was still a great response. This number included four members from the Downs, one from the Gold Coast, two renewals and one new member. John Duggan and Frank Akes missed the game after John had a fall, but he is now OK.

The Course was in great shape though the Bunkers still needed attention after the recent rain, and voluntary GUR was exercised on them all. There has not been a report on whether anyone hit from any of them. The Greens were still recovering from recent maintenance which was blamed on missed putts, whether justified or not in some cases.

Gaye and Barry Geldard had the Urn set up for the early arrivals and provided the biscuits. With a new chef, players enjoyed a prepared meal after the game as well as the usual sandwiches and snacks.

We were expecting one of the four locals to feature in the trophy list, but it wasn’t to be when they were shared by Rosewood, Sandy Gallop and Ipswich City because of top scoring by Jim Gilbert, Jeff Brown and Pauline Rogers. Graeme O’Connor’s birdie on hole 6, Marysha Boonstoppel’s 25cm on hole 12 and Ross Grant’s fine 128cm’s on the 17th ensured they won three of the Pin Shots.

Photos.

1. Some thought needed here for the second shot to be in a good spot to play the third or fourth or fifth shot.

2. Yes, there is a ball there and he hit it out well.

3. Two of our visitors from the Downs with short putts for Par on the 11th.

4. It had to be a good shot, and it was, because it was played from the 13th to get up near the Green on the 14th.

5. Comfortably back in the Clubhouse with plenty to discuss.

The next game will be at Gatton on Monday 24th May. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun Start. The Timesheet is at Rosewood.
