With recent unpredictable rainy periods during the day, it was of concern to players as to whether it would stay fine during the game. It did, and it was perfect weather for golf with only 4 or 5 drops that some may not even have felt just before noon.
The field this year was a disappointing 69 (59 Men and 10 Ladies), after early indications were that there would be between 75 and 80. Illness was in part responsible for this but those who did play had little difficulty in keeping up with play. There were three renewing members and one new member. Once we got into the Clubhouse, Acting Captain Rod moved registrations at a good pace, and we were able to get away right on time.
The Course enjoyed good weekend rain, but it was too late to produce instant grass on the Fairways. The Preferred Lie option allowed some relief in the rough and in the first section of each Fairway. The Greens were the recipients of the available water and once again they were in top condition. With the Club Championship Final being played on the weekend, some of the Pin placements were very challenging.
Registration was carried out in the Clubhouse this year, and this left the generous sized verandah free for relaxing before play. The Roast lunch was very generous and very welcome.
Scoring was again very difficult this year and there were no scores in the 40’s. At least all winners were in the 30’s this year with Bob Ellison, Gana Arumugam and Marysha Boonstoppel winning the trophies. A bigger Ball Rundown than was anticipated was awarded to cover the balls not won in the Pin Shots. Rod Turnbull was the only winner here with the two which were paid.
Photos.
1. The Greens were just that but quite a bit of the rest of the Course was a different colour.
2. Ron’s ball was saved from a watery finish by that thin yellow post.
3. This putt of Bob’s was very close, but not in the hole.
4. Joe kept most drives on the Fairway, but the ones he missed gave some tough recovery shots.
5. New member Terry swaps tales with one of our very seasoned veteran players.
The next game is an 8.30am Shotgun start at Esk on the 25th March.
