A phone call late in the day on Sunday confirmed that the game would proceed despite the Saturday night downpour. Monday was fine and humid with the temperature in the low 30’s, but players ensured they were carrying sufficient fluids.
After about a dozen withdrawals, the field today was 80 (68 men and 12 ladies), a good number considering the doubt about whether the game would proceed. Of these, eight were returning members, and there was one new member as well. The road from Esk was cut, but that didn’t deter the awesome foursome from Esk detouring around the problem via the Gatton road, even after the disappointment of losing their home game last week.
The Course had had little time to dry out and there were sections from which relief had to be taken. Players showed their appreciation of the opportunity to play today by adhering to the requirements for protecting the Fairway surfaces. Once on the perfect Greens, there was no thought about the previous 3, 4 or 5 shots it took to get there. It was such a pleasure to putt on them.
Those in need of a boost before play enjoyed their Tea or Coffee and the post-game lunch selection suited all needs.
A 37- or 38-point card was required to be a winner today and Shirley Luhrman, Bob Mathers and Ken Rogers scored that for a win. Unlucky was John Osborne who lost the countback in Division 1. A very generous ball rundown was planned for today and many on lower scores benefitted from this even though the scores reflected the very difficult conditions for so many. John Walsh didn’t let the conditions faze him by scoring a fine eagle on the 17th hole. Congratulations John.
Photos:
1. Testing, testing. The lines on hole 1 tested clear after all the rain.
2. No Roo’s on Fairways today. They were all safe and dry on the high ground.
3. The Greens were in top condition but this putt just wasn’t Ted’s distance.
4. Paul was the one in this group to get a rundown ball today, but he won’t be mentioning his score.
5. John, far right, had an 88 metre eagle on the 17th today, even though it was from a fairly wet section of the Fairway.
The next game will be at Ipswich City on Monday 21st March. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun start. The Timesheet is now at Rosewood Golf Club.
