It was a fine day, and the Temperature was a bearable 30 degrees because of the steady breeze, but that didn’t stop players using the shade when the opportunity arose.
This year the field was 115 (94 men and 21 ladies) up 16 on last year’s field due to the increased number of men turning out. Of these, two were visitors who intend joining next year while another local player intends to join but didn’t play today. Anxious members turned up in good time and allowed play to get underway about 10 minutes early.
The Course was well prepared with the Greens mowed, but there’s not a lot that can be done to improve the Fairway playing surface when the rain doesn’t eventuate. One thing which proved to be helped by this was the amount of run on the Course as long as the ball was launched in the correct direction. The Greens played well while allowing the longer cut to protect them which made them a little slower than usual but fairly true.
Mary outdid herself this November with the food trays she made available for players. Thanks Mary. and the bar and ground staff for your efforts to make us feel so welcome at Rosewood. The smorgasbord lunch was refreshing after the game, and the catering ladies have our thanks as well.
The big scorer today was Graham Johnson with his 45 points. It was a pity Denise wasn’t there to see it. He took out a Pin Shot as well. Good honest 35 and 39 points won trophies for Leona Sheraton and Graham Wilson, and Leona also took out a Pin Shot. Disappointment of the day, and perhaps of the year, was by John Hunter who finished 7cm from the 15th Pin, but there wasn’t a Pin Shot there today. He got a consolation prize anyhow. Thanks to Michael Schilling for donating the balls for the 6th hole Pin Shots.
Photos.
1. Not taken after the game. It’s before, and there’s still plenty to socialise about before hit-off.
2. Peter Roche, the 1997 QVGU State Champion the year they were hosted by Ipswich Golf Club, still using that careful pre-shot routine that made him a top player for so many years.
3. Not too many players found much to laugh about, but something tickled Shirley’s fancy.
4. No it wasn’t this shot, but a very wayward one by the same player a couple of holes back.
5. Terry’s not in front of the marker; it’s just the camera angle playing tricks on us.
The next game is Opening Day 2017 at Rosewood on Monday 30th January. The AGM will follow presentations. Additional information on Opening Day and the Annual General Meeting will be included in the “Notices” section of this website and in the QT in January. The Timesheet for the game will be available at Rosewood Golf Club from Friday 13th of January. (Is that a coincidence?). Copies of our 2017 programme were given to players today. A copy has been placed in the Vets Timesheet folder at Rosewood and it has been posted on this website. The 2017 Membership Card containing the Game venues and Club Phone Numbers will be available from Opening Day. The phone number for the new venue in 2017, Warwick, is 04 08 222 602. They have 20 Buggies for hire.
That concludes a very interesting year of Veteran golf and a hope that 2017 will be even better. Thanks to all who helped in any way this year. The Committee hopes to see you all again on 30th January. Compliments of the Season to all.
