Event 3 – Laidley

Another testing hot day’s golf with players making sure they were well stocked with water bottles. There was a slight warm breeze but that was enough to keep conditions within a reasonable comfort zone. One player didn’t make the distance, but that was only because of a buggy problem.

The field was 74 (62 Men and 12 Ladies), down 10 men on last year’s number, but sufficient to keep the game to about four and a half hours. There were four returning players in that number as well as two new members.

The Course is suffering dreadfully from the lack of water, and even with the use of Preferred Lie, the playing surface was very challenging. Thankfully the matting of the dry grass gave good ground cover and players weren’t left with bare lies in many areas. The Greens, where the score was finally determined, were in top shape and a pleasure to putt on.

The urn was boiling on the arrival of the early birds, so I’m told, and the Tea, Coffee and biscuits were well received. The two lunch choices were enjoyed, but not as much as the liquids eagerly sought to quench the thirst.

One 40-point game today by Bob Mathers, who took home the Division 2 trophy. Gertie Daniel won her second trophy in a row as a prelude to an absence playing in the Ladies Pennants. John Hafner thought he had a Birdie on the second hole, but the ball stopped 7cm short.

Photos.

1. There’s always plenty to discuss before a game.

2. Are you supposed to be watching John’s ball, Maurie?

3. First game with us and it was his putting which tried hard to get him a win.

4. Oh Barry. You wouldn’t have found those 5 balls if it had rained recently.

5. Another one over and Graeme must be thinking about the next game.

The next game is at City (Toowoomba) on Monday 27th February. It is an 8.30am Shotgun start. The Club has found buggies for all those needing one and the temperature is predicted to only reach 27degrees. The following game is at Lowood on Monday 6th March.
