Event 26 – Laidley

A fine day which proved ideal for golf, accompanied by the well-noted Laidley breeze to keep players honest. What a welcome surprise on entering the re-furbished clubhouse. Well done Laidley.

The field was 63(53 men and 10 ladies), a result of some late withdrawals for a number of reasons. All arrived in good time and allowed an early hit-off. The Course to be played was the ‘Silver Course’, and the look-up sheets were appropriately labelled to help with locating playing handicaps. The new lap top computer helped a few to find out their exact handicaps.

Tea/Coffee and biscuits were provided for players on arrival and those who ordered lunch had two to select from, both of which were very satisfying.

Prefered Lie through the Green was necessary as the Course has yet to receive the benefit of a good downpour of Spring rain. Hopefully, the nine mm received after the game will help a little in this regard. We again ran into Greens which had been sanded, this time after coring, but it seems that they should now come better than ever, even though in their present state quite a few shots were sacrificed to the uneven surface.

It doesn’t happen that often, but the ladies had the best score of the day with Ailsa Brown’s 43 points. One behind was 88 year old Ron Pflugrath who went within 2 strokes of shooting his age. Jim Crichton made the winner’s list with 40 points, the best Division 1 score. The Pin shot on the 12/18th Green cost the Association 15 balls when 3 players had birdies.

Photos. Sorry, none today. Camera left at home.

The next game is at Sandy Gallop on Monday 24th October. It is an 8.30am Shotgun start, and the Club runs the competition, sponsors the day and provides the trophies. Paul Harbers is busy making sure the day is a success.
