Event 25 – City (Toowoomba)

A Spring game at City was supposed to have been a calm September day with the temperature around the mid-twenty mark. What eventuated was rather warmer than that at 33 degrees with hot winds as well. Nevertheless, it was still very enjoyable as many spent some considerable time under the shade of trees.

The field ended up being 105(84 Men and 21 Ladies), almost on a par with the first game this year and only made possible by the efforts of the Pro Shop Staff and the Manager in getting sufficient buggies for all who needed one. In this number were two new members.

The Course was at its usual high standard and many more shots would have stayed on the Fairways except for the effect of the wind on shots too far from Fairway centre. The Greens were in top condition, though two-paced in some cases. Putts were true for those daring enough to allow for the effect of the wind.

The staff had the Urn boiling by 7.30am and players made the most of their time before hit-off to get some sustenance after the trip up the range. All finished in time to purchase lunch from the Restaurant menu.

The change from the conditions at Esk didn’t deter Bernie Moore and he won Division 2 on countback with 38 points. Jeff Brown prevented Ken Robertson having his first Veteran’s win, also on countback. It’s happened yet again, new Player Di Stanley took home the Ladies Trophy at her first game. Welcome and Congratulations, Di. The following breeze was not anticipated when the 2nd hole was selected for a Pin Shot, and most got a lot closer to the Green than usual, but it was Maurie Clem’s 24cm which no one else could match.

1. Last minute checks before the start of play.

2. You can’t see the relief on Gary’s face, but if his chip hadn’t hit the flag, he was off the other side of the Green.

3. How did Rhonda get the ball to stay out of the water on hole 18, and then play this difficult shot up onto the Green?

4. Not the first time today that Ian had a shot like this one, I believe.

5. First timer, Di Stanley, says a few words after receiving her trophy.

The next game is an 8.30am Shotgun start at Laidley on the 9th October.
