2nd Round of the 2021 Championships
Sponsored by Queensland Country Bank
With the playing of the Championships already delayed, it was hoped that all went well today. To start, the weather was favourable, with an early briskness typical of early Spring. Once the Field was finally dispatched there was no doubt that the Round would be successfully completed.
It is to be hoped that external factors have less effect on our games next year and there are no interruptions to our programme. This second Round only had 68 starters, (54 men and 14 ladies), the fewest ever and the overall was only 153. Nevertheless, competition was keen and a good number of players participated in the event by submitting Stableford scores. Playing at different Courses under the Slope system of handicapping had its challenges but, in the end, all went well.
The Course was in good condition, but Preferred Lie was still permitted to rule out some of the possible unfair lies which could be encountered during this event. The Greens were well covered, but every care was needed not to be caught mis-reading the many undulations.
Players appreciated the boiling urn and the biscuits before play, and the hamburgers after play.
Des Davies (131) and Lyn Baker (143) emerged as Champions for 2021. Des led from start to finish and relished the ‘Home Course’ conditions in the second Round. The other local, Cameron Powell, made the most of his home Course to take out the Men’s Gross. This was Lyn’s third Championship win with a final Round that even surprised herself. Shirley Luhrman was a clear winner of the Gross event. Bob Mathers (140), Dorothy Pearson (155) and Ernie Wright (140) took out the Age events. New member, Sel Ziebarth, had a memorable two days with three Pin Shots.
