Event 20 – Karana Downs

Another comfortably fine Winter’s Day providing the weather for a very enjoyable day’s golf. The only downside was the noticeably strong breeze which sought to change the direction in which many players thought they had projected their missiles.

There were 73 players (61 men and 12 ladies), up 9 on last year’s number, which came about by an increase in the number of men in the field. One local member nominated for a game and ended up taking out membership. The first group completed their Round in three and a quarter hours, and all players were back in by about 1.15pm.

The Course has held up very well with good grass cover and pretty good lies all around the majority of the Fairways. The layout certainly presents many management challenges for players which can be less daunting the more it is played and the difficult areas avoided. The Greens were also in top condition but some Pin placements and the slopes on others saw putting swell the score on a few of the holes.

The enclosed Registration area and the boiling urn made for a cosy gathering point before the game and Brett’s burgers were again eagerly sought after the game.

Even with two washed holes, Graham Wilson was able to amass 41 points, the only forty score of the day, for a Division 2 win. In the other Divisions Countbacks were needed to determine the winners, with Ailsa Brown and Peter Frazer the lucky ones. After some top Shots on the ‘non-Pin Shot’ par threes, a couple of players believed that the Pins should have been on ‘their’ holes.

1. Seven Heads are better than one, sometimes.

2. Plenty of thought went into this one, but it still ran on too far.

3. Effort also was well rewarded here as it paid off with a win by three shots.

4. Thanks Chris, for helping to get the cards through today.

5. Peter was pleased to have a win today as it allowed him to choose a very welcome Trophy.

The next game is at Ipswich City on Monday 21st August. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun start and is the first Round of the 2017 IDVGA Championships.
