Event 20 – Gailes

Just a perfect day for golf again and because of the support of members to play at a Course of this standard, the Committee felt justified in keeping the playing fee at the usual amount and sponsoring the trophies.

The field today was 120 (98 men and 22 ladies), a number which allowed the field to run pretty smoothly. Of these, two were returning members. There were a few changes to chosen Tees, but with timely arrival by all, players were dispatched a few minutes early.

The Course was in excellent condition though the Club was concerned about maintaining it at that level without rain. The Greens could not be faulted, and low scoring was mostly caused by the effort taken to reach them after extricating the ball from one of the many Bunkers.

The refreshments on arrival were ready for the early arrivals and the two lunch choices were very well priced and most enjoyable.

Scoring proved difficult today where hazards were encountered but two players scored in the 40’s and two just missed out. Paul Mahoney’s 42 topped them all and Doug Gillett’s 39 won him the Division 2 trophy. Shiela Goodbun’s knowledge of the Course helped her to win the Ladies trophy. Ken Robertson played very well for his 76 off the stick.

Photos.

1. Pre-game preparations are many and varied.

2. The Ladies are spared the effort of clearing the water on this hole.

3. Not the ideal spot to be.

4. Determination saw Ian well out of here and almost on the Green on the 10th.

5. Winners can be grinners but not when you’re paying attention to the conversation of the moment.

The next game will be at Ipswich City on Monday 19th August. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun Start and is the first Round of the 2019 Championships which will see trophies for both Stroke and Stableford Rounds as a trial to cater for all members.
