Event 2 – Sandy Gallop

What could have been an unbearably hot day was tempered by a very welcome breeze for most of the Round. One distressed player wisely pulled out and others sought shaded areas during breaks in play. Despite the grass cover, the weather and the need to search for balls in some areas, all groups finished in less than about four and a half hours.

A field was 82 (72 men and 10 ladies) with seven withdrawals and including seven new or returning members. With all players arriving in good time, and the prior preparation of the score cards by Paul Harbers, play got under way about 10 minutes early. The entry of the returned scores also proceeded smoothly allowing for an early presentation of trophies as well.

The Course was very lush with good grass cover giving players every opportunity to play shots except from those areas where grass was not cut so low around greens. The Greens were in very good condition but could be easily misread if the grain was not accurately read or the slope of the green taken too lightly.

A good choice from wraps, rolls and homemade pies satisfied the lunch requirements of players who enjoyed the comfort of the air-conditioned clubhouse.

Division 2’s Ian McColm and Ron Quinlan’s 42 points were the day’s best, with Ian taking the trophy. Lyn Baker and Stephen O’Connor were the other winners with Stephen winning his first Vets trophy. John Hunter is back to his accurate best with two Pin Shots wins.
