Event 19 – Wolston Park

How many comments were heard to the effect of ” what a beautiful day”, and so it was, with hardly a cloud in the sky, a mid-twenties temperature and just the gentlest of breezes. It must have inspired everyone to get here early, as we were ready to go at 8.20am.

The field contained 97 players (84 men and 13 ladies), a great result for Wolston Park which could have been 108 except for the onset of the Flu season. It was pleasing to have Les’s brother Kev Smith join us again for a game today, and another three of our members now have enough games to qualify for a start in the Championship competition, but remember all members are welcome to play on one or both days in the Daily competition.

Preferred Lies were available on the Fairway being played but were not always needed. Some even had to take free relief from tree roots to keep their clubs intact, but when it came to the Greens, the surfaces were mostly excellent with a true roll even though the exact line to take was often a real challenge.

Dorothy Pearson was again to the forefront in having the Urn boiling as well as providing home-cooked biscuits for our nourishment and enjoyment. It wasn’t surprising that there were none left at hit-off. The Club was thrown into a late change of plans for lunch with the absence of the chef, but except that not everyone who was hoping for the tasty Wolston Park Hamburger and Chips, there were sufficient alternatives in Pies and sandwiches to satisfy all tastes. Thanks, David, for the effort in this regard.

Two scores in the 40’s today with Peter Moran winning by two from Brian Yates in Division 2. Ray Mc Leod kept his good form going with another win in Division 1 and Pauline Rogers had to rely on a Countback to take the Ladies trophy. Bruce Thorogood’s 34 points could have seen him challenge for the Ladies trophy but he had to settle for a ball in the Rundown. However, no one could undersell his two great Pin shots to win the trophies on holes 3 and 13.

1. The early birds got some putting practice in.

2. Welcome back Col, after quite a long break from Vets games. And the combined ages of these two is 178 years.

3. Fay usually does well on her home Course, but she was 4 shots off the pace today.

4. Bruce still thinking about the two short putts on his Pin Shot holes.

5. The fog has lifted, and the game is over, but there’s still plenty to comment on this great outdoor area.

The next game will be at Karana Downs on Monday 7th August. The following game is the first Round of the 2017 Championships at Ipswich City on Monday 21st August. Both Timesheets are now at Rosewood.
