The 1st of June, the first day of winter, but usually the full impact of winter is not usually felt until later in the month. But not this year. The game was delayed until the ladies had finished Pennants etc. and was one game day too late to enjoy the pleasant Autumn weather. Look at the clothing worn by the players. You would think some were luxuriating at the Coast and not in 15 degree overcast Downs weather with a constant south westerly blowing.
The field ended up being 81 (65 Men and 16 Ladies), very encouraging for an ‘Away Game’ and an indication that members are prepared to travel to Toowoomba if more games at City were included in our programme, depending on the time of the year chosen, of course. Included in the numbers were 3 visitors.
The Course was in magnificent shape and the improvements being made are making it even more enjoyable. We are looking forward to playing the re-developed 1st Hole next year. Probably the smell of Camphor Laurel from the discarded trees won’t be as strong, but the new Green will be a treat. Putting was a nightmare on all Greens, not helped by the wind, with 4 Putt Greens quite common.
The Management had the Urn boiling
on our arrival, and this certainly put some warmth into bodies being made ready for the fray. After the game, the choice of meals left no one dissatisfied and being given membership status for the day was greatly appreciated.
John Hafner and Rick Murgatroyd finished 1/2 in Division 1 last year and again this year, only this year John took the number one spot. In Division 2 , Bruce Thorogood repeated his effort of last year and again had to be happy with runner-up. Marysha Boonstoppel returned to the fold after Pennants and took the ladies trophy. Not often do you see Rundowns going to 29 and 22.
Photos.
1. You can’t see the problems which lie ahead from this view of the 16th hole.
2. Why aren’t these three rugged up like nearly everyone else?
3. Ailsa had already been in one Bunker on this temporary hole but with determination she landed on grass with this shot.
4. After shooting the best score of the day you are entitled to a smile or two.
5. Marysha was a winner also, so the company is enjoyable here too. Even the peanut gallery has joined in the celebrations.
The next game is an 8.30am Shotgun start at Gatton on the 22nd June.
