Event 12 – Warwick

Three days before the end of Autumn for this game was a bit of a gamble as colder days were a distinct possibility. Luckily, the temperature on Monday only got down to 7 degrees whereas on the Tuesday it was zero degrees. With heavy fog for much of the first half of the journey to the Club, it was a relief to welcome a perfectly fine day where the maximum temperature got to 19 degrees.

or this first trip to Warwick by the IDVGA, the field of 77 (62 Men and 15 Ladies), was an extremely pleasing result. Buggies could have been a problem, but the Pro cooperated so well that the shortage was made up from Buggies loaned by Club members, an effort of which all players were very grateful.

With the year so far into Autumn, it was always a possibility that the Course could have been dry and well advanced with a stressed drying grass coverage. This was not so, and we were extremely happy with the Fairways and the Greens, even though they were mown to their mid-year height, were great to putt on.

The Clubhouse doesn’t open until 10.30am of a morning, but with a very well laid out patio area overlooking the finishing holes, and the urn on the boil from 7.00am, registrations and the pre-game hot beverages were well catered for. The hot roast lunch was well supported and was readily served after the game.

Though most Fairways were wide, as well as having plenty of run, scoring was kept lower than expected, partly because wayward shots in the tree line sometimes were not all that easy to recover from. Wally Bodetti’s 38 and Barry Murphy’s 37 were the best scores of the day and they won the men’s trophies. Rhonda Williams had 33 points to win the ladies event. Charles Stevenson beat all others for the ‘All In’ Pin Shot on the 16th hole, a Green not too many landed on.

Photos.

1. At 7.30am a heavy dew covered the Course, but it had disappeared by hit-off time.

2. The early arrivals were well rugged up and thoroughly enjoying a cuppa.

3. Sarah tees off and, like everyone else, is dwarfed by the massive eucalypts throughout the Course.

4. At least Graham could play a shot from there. Others behind trees weren’t so lucky.

5. No luck at Warwick Rod. It would have been nice to come up with your third recent major trophy today.

6. Shirley looks after the wives while the men hear about how Wal won the Division 1 trophy.

The next game is an 8.30am Shotgun start at Boonah on the 5th June.
