The good news was that a fine day was predicted. The not so good news was that water being released from Wivenhoe Dam had closed College’s Crossing. However, the alternative route over the Mt Crosby Weir was open and everyone got through even though all experienced long delays when one lane over the Weir was closed.
There were 57 players (51 men and 6 ladies), a smaller number than was hoped for, and with the smaller field most finished in around four hours. This was somewhat surprising as there was little run on most of the Course and those walking would have found the going pretty slow.
The Course was in very good condition, though with the weekend’ deluge, there were many wet patches, and the sand Bunkers had to be taken out of play, a decision which only a few regretted. The Greens all allowed an even roll, and if left with a putt from above the hole, it resulted in quite a roll back past the hole if the ball didn’t drop.
Homemade pies with mashed potatoes and peas was an unexpected treat and from player reactions, they will also feature at the next Sandy Gallop game.
As was expected, the scores were down with the Ball Rundowns 32 and 31 points. The standout score of the day was Maurie Clem’s 41 to win Division 2. Pauline Rogers 23cm measure on the 12th Green was a great effort considering the Pin placement at the back of the Green.
Photos.
1. The Course looked so peaceful and serene under the early morning dew.
2. A pity the practice Green didn’t have a bit more slope to it like those on the Course.
3. A different experience for the Esk boys with a ravine on the right to catch any wayward shots.
4. No ball Shirl. And have you taken up one – handed putting?
5. If you haven’t worked out the last photo, don’t try to explain this one, and it’s not what you think.
The next game is at Gailes on 18th May. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun start. The following game is on Monday 25th May at Laidley. Both are 8.30am Shotgun starts.
