Gailes turned on absolutely perfect playing conditions, weather wise, and this ensured that many of those playing the Course for the first time were not distracted by wind, rain or excessive heat. Next time a couple who had two goes at arriving without diversions should have no trouble.
While fields have been up this year, there was no way of knowing in November when the Programme was drawn up, to include a visit from Woodford, that at one time there would be 143 IDVGA players on the Timesheet. This hasn’t happened for many years. As it turned out, this number ended up at 137 plus 15 Woodford starters, (Two of theirs got lost along the way also), making a final field of 152 (127 men and 25 ladies). Some changes were necessary to the original Timesheet to keep it as compact as possible. Playing time ranged from four and a half to five hours, and the comments were as diverse as the players making them, though there were no reports of long delays on any particular hole. Still, most agreed that they had a great day and hope to have a better score in July.
The Course was turned out in terrific order with the Fairways a pleasure to hit from. Care had to be taken in the second cut rough as often the grass was just long enough to camouflage the position of the ball. Putting on the Greens needed more care as they are still a week or two away from full recovery from maintenance earlier in the month but they were still a pleasure to play,
Gaye and Barry Geldard arrived early to ensure the Urnwas set up for the early arrivals and to ensure that there was sufficient for all, including travellers. The three choice smorgasbord lunches and the usual Gailes fresh sandwiches, snacks and plates of chips, were very well received.
Nev Halls made the most of his game last week at Gailes to score 42 points and beat local lad, John Hafner, by a point. Des Davies, with 41 points, scored a three point win in Division 2 and Shirley Luhrman added another win before heading overseas on a trip. There were only 2 points between the first four Woodford players, but President, John Stephens, took home the Trophy while two of his players won Pin Shots.
Photos.
1. This seems like a very serene spot but not for those hitting to the right of the 14th or 15th holes.
2. I didn’t get all of John in the photo, but at least I got the ball coming off the club. You try that sometime.
3. Good mates John and Jeff relaxing before their next shots.
4. Oh Bob, you can just see the ball, and you could still see it after his shot.
5. No comment here as I don’t know if it’s the first fairway he’s hit today.
6. The one following last week’s offering. I hope no one is offended but it relates so well to some golf situations.
The next game will be at Laidley on Monday 14th May. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun Start. If you want a game before then remember that Woodford has invited our members to join them in their weekly competition on Thursday 10th May. It’s an 8.30am shotgun start and the Game fee is $16. We have 14 players already. Ring Ossie if you are interested.
