Event 1 – Rosewood – Opening Day

Variety is supposed to be the spice of life. Well, we had plenty of it today only it resembled frustration rather than spice. The early cloudy skies made conditions very comfortable while the temperature started to rise and then a couple of returning showers and the quite strong wind caused annoyance for a while, and just as quickly ceased before anyone threw in the towel, and finally the sun came out and we got the predicted hot day just as we were playing our finishing holes.

The day ended up fine and hot and 127 players (108 men and 19 ladies) weathered the Registration queue to get the 2018 programme underway. Of these, 18 (14 men and 4 ladies) were new members or previous members who have rejoined. In addition, thirteen of last year’s members who have yet to play were registered as well. It was full credit to the booking in system and the efficiency of the Committee and the patience of players that we comfortably achieved our 8.30am hit-off time.

The Course was showing the stress of the lengthy hot period this Summer, but with the application of a Preferred Lie, those able to stay on the Fairways had every opportunity to score. Maintenance of the Greens is causing the Club the most concern, but the placement of Pins on most of them allowed reasonable putting, while on two or three, the best approach was to get the first one close enough to hope for a two-putt.

Even in Mary Gibson’s absence the excellent selection of eats to supplement the tea and coffee was much appreciated especially as car trouble delayed their arrival. Thanks so much Rosewood ladies.

How often it happens is just amazing, but today again, new players featured in the trophies. In fact, two of them, Ruth Wass (32ocb) and Graeme Gordon (45 and by 7 shots), won their Divisions. John Osborne’s long awaited win came in the other Division when he survived a 4-way countback to win with 39 points. Pauline Rogers won two Pin shots to make sure she had some to give Ken when they get back from overseas.

Photos.

1. There’s plenty to catch up on after a two-month break.

2. There was plenty of space on this hole to open your shoulders, Rod.

3. Ted had no problem putting this one, and not just because it’s his home track.

4. The old fellows are looking for a tip, Bill. It’s a pity you’re left-handed.

5. Pam left this one 5 cm short. Had she got it she would have been in the Countback.

6. Peter says it all. We’re back, it was a great day and let us do it again next week.

The next game will be held at Sandy Gallop on Monday 5th February. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun start. The Timesheet is at Rosewood Golf Club.

The Annual Report for the 2017 year was presented at the AGM following Presentations. Last year’s Office Bearers were re-elected unopposed and Joe Hines was elected to join the Committee. The Annual Report welcomed new and returning players and then touched on the increased numbers at most of our venues, some facts related to the 2017 Programme, the willing assistance given by all Committee members, the assurance that any assistance forthcoming from members would be eagerly accepted and other matters relating to the conduct of Association business. The Secretary/Treasurer reported a slight increase in Receipts over Expenditure as a result of a careful check on daily expenditure at games during the year, and as well that the playing fees will be able to remain the same for another 12 months.
