Conditions Of Play

Daily Competition

Most Competitions will be 18 Hole Single Medley Stableford events, with the occasional Ambrose events, played as per the Fixture Programme, unless weather, Course Conditions or decisions by the host club require changes to be made.

The competition will be played in three Men’s Divisions, and a Ladies Division. These will be:
Men’s Division 1 – Scratch (0) up to Handicap 10,
Men’s Division 2 – Handicap 11 to 18,
Men’s Division 3 Handicap 19+, and a single
Ladies Division.

All play will be by Timesheet which is located at the Rosewood Golf Club. Hit-off times will usually be 8.30am Shotgun starts, though earlier starts are implemented where there are One or Two Tee hit-offs when playing groups are ready to play, as this allows earlier finishes for later players. Whilst Shotgun starts place additional pressure on the Captain in finalising the day’s results and also on the caterers with large numbers finishing at about the same time, it has proved very popular with players because of the added social interaction before and after the game. Players are free to choose their own playing groups if they so desire. The Clubs which host our games do so on the understanding that our members comply with the dress standards and Course and Clubhouse behaviour observed by their own members.

NB:  The IDVGA Championship are held as Stroke competition, with separate conditions of play.  More information on the IDVGA Championship can be found here:

Standardized Competition Rules

The Rules of Golf, with the following IDVGA Competition Local Rules will apply for ALL our competition events.

Notwithstanding the playing conditions outline below, the local rules published at each club will also apply, unless overwritten by our own competition playing conditions below.

Alternative to Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Ball Out of Bounds.  (Reference: Based on R&A Model Local Rule E-5)

When a player’s ball has not been found or is known or virtually certain to be out of bounds, and the player has not hit a provisional ball, the player must, to assist the pace of play, proceed as follows rather than returning to the location of the previous stroke.

  • For two penalty strokes, the player may take relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area.
  • Relief Area is defined as 2 club lengths on the fairway, 90 degrees from where the ball crossed out of bounds or where the lost ball is virtually certain or known to be, no nearer the hole.

Preferred Lie through the Green.  (Reference: Based on R&A Model Local Rule E-3)

You are entitled to prefer your lie (e.g. within 6 inches, or the width of the score card) without penalty anywhere on the golf course through the green, except if your ball is in a hazard or a bunker.

  • This covers most of the course and is where a player’s ball will most often be played until the ball reaches the putting green. It includes every type of ground and growing or attached objects found in that area, such as fairway, rough and trees.

Line of sight relief.    (Reference: Based on R&A Model Local Rule F-5)

Players are entitled to relief without penalty from manmade immovable obstructions, including garden bed edging or staking, signage, distance markers, sprinkler heads etc., if they interfere with their lie, stance or swing, or line of putt.

Exception – No Relief If Line of Play Clearly Unreasonable. There is no relief under this Local Rule if the player chooses a line of play that is clearly unreasonable.

Relief for Ball in Bunker.  (Reference: Based on Rule 16.1c – Abnormal Course Condition)

If a player’s ball is in a bunker and there is interference by an abnormal course condition in the bunker (e.g. Bunker not properly maintained; including un-raked areas, animal or human tracks and/or casual water), the player may take relief without penalty.   The player may ‘rake and place’ when taking relief, provided:

  • The nearest point of complete relief and the relief area must be in the bunker, no nearer the hole, or
  • If there is no such nearest point of complete relief in the bunker, the player may still take this relief by using the point of maximum available relief in the bunker as the reference point.
Condition of Play

Players will use their current Golf Australia Daily Playing Handicaps for the Course being played.  Members are expected to write their Given names, Daily Handicap and Golf Australia ID/Golflink numbers on their scorecards to assist with the compilation of results.

Motorised buggies and Distance measuring devices are permitted in all events. The hire of Buggies is the responsibility of the player.

All complaints must be in the hands of the Captain (or his Representative), in writing, within fifteen (15) minutes of the completion of the Round by the group concerned.

Nearest the Pins

Nearest the Pin and Approach Shot prize will be allocated each Competition day according to the size of the field or the Sponsorship received.

At least one prize will be provided each normal competition day for Ladies, Men’s Division 1, 2 and 3.

Handicapping and Prizes

Following each game conducted by this Association, action will be taken to have the scores updated to the Golf Australia (GA) application as soon as possible, particularly as many of our Lady members play in competitions the following day.

Any queries about GA entries for our competitions should be addressed to the captain (Arthur Green) and not to the Club at which the event was held.

Each Division will be allocated separate Winners and Runners-up prizes or trophies (where appropriate).  Currently, the prizes are Gift Cards Vouchers or Cash as determined by the Committee.

Combined Ball Rundowns will apply to the Men’s and Ladies competitions.

Prizes will be presented at the conclusion of each day’s play. Prizes not collected within 2 months will return to the trophy pool.

Association Shirts

Through Association subsidy, the cost of Association Shirts is kept at a reasonable level. They can be taken as prizes as well as being available for purchase.

The Captain and President handle Shirt sales and arrange for the embroidery of the Association Logo and the member’s name on them after being purchased or won.

Membership Card

Members are given a Membership Card on payment of the annual membership fee. The card contains the current year Programme, the names and phone numbers of Committee members and those of Clubs where our games will be played.

The QVGU, with whom we are affiliated, also issues a membership card to all IDVGA members and no member will be permitted to play in sanctioned Veteran competitions throughout Queensland without the presentation of the QVGU card to confirm Affiliation with that Association.

We welcome Visitors to our competitions provided they are members of a Club or District affiliated with the QVGU or the AVGU and can provide evidence of this.

After the declaration of all competitions, the game results will be published in the Results section of the website
