1st Round of the 2014 Championships
What a way to spend the day! Indoors watching TV would have made more sense. ‘Partly cloudy with early strong winds’ was the forecast. As it turned out, this only told half the story. Add gusty winds when trying to play a shot and very cold when the sun went behind a cloud, which was very often in the first half of the game. Luckily, the clouds dispersed in the latter part of the day. In fact, the best conditions were during lunch.
The field was 89 (73 Men and 16 Ladies), down 10 on last year’s field, but above the average for the fields at other games this year. One player returned after a long absence following injury and one new member joined but did not play.
Preferred lie through the Green was a wise move as the wind ensured many shots finished off the Fairway. A tinge of green had started to appear after Saturday’s rain and should be more in evidence next week. The Greens would have been quite good without the dreaded winter grass which had seeded, and on a couple of holes where the flag was placed near clumps of it, putting was a bit of a lottery.
Mary’s pikelets are becoming a staple diet at our games and are eagerly sought to accompany a Tea/Coffee prior to play. The hot lunch was probably the highlight of the cold and windy day for most with the usual good variety of meal choices. It is to be hoped that Ron Pflugrath had a biscuit or pikelet before play as a butcherbird relieved him of his biscuits on the Course as he was playing a shot.
Ernie Lee’s fine nett 64 was one better than Richard Winrow’s 65 opening Round score last year. He’ll be hoping he can repeat Richard’d effort and go all the way in Round 2. Graham Doyle is his closest rival with a nett 68. Disappointment for Rob Walker whose nett 66 won’t count after he signed an incorrect scorecard. There were 2 other disqualifications for the same infringement as well as three NCR’s. The ladies made a countback unnecessary to determine the finishing order as the first 9 scores were all different. June Schipplock and Marysha Boonstoppel are only 1 shot apart at the head of the field and will be hoping for a good start next Round.

1. Would you buy fruit (or anything for that matter) from this pair.
2. Like all his shots, Rainbow took great care with this one.
3. Val was making sure Gertie got the distance down correctly to make sure she had balls for next week.
4. Ian and Jeff tell Ted and Shiela about their first stroke Round with the Vets.
5. All hands-on deck. It might be the Championships, but the money still has to tally.
