35 degrees was predicted but officially the temperature only reached 34. Actually, the day was quite pleasant except for the heat affecting some tired bodies playing the last three or four holes. The best news was that the rain kept away, but it appears that the Course benefitted by up to 30 mms from the late evening storm.
We were hoping for a field of about 90 and were very pleased with the final roll-up of 98 (78 men and 20 ladies). Of these four were new members who we hope join us in most of our games next year. With all arriving early, play got under way 10 minutes early.
Who would be a Greenkeeper? After nurturing the Course along to get it in top condition and then to have water supply problems and a couple of scorchers must have been so frustrating at Rosewood. Still, with care and careful Course Management, the conditions allowed good scoring opportunities. The Greens have held up well and caused no problems.
All players arrived well on time today and it was probably because they didn’t want to miss Mary’s home cooking. Thanks, Mary, for the goodies and for getting the President out of a spot by buying the peanuts for the tables after play. The cold smorgasbord was well received, and the caterers were kept busy topping up empty dishes.
Gerry Maloney has finally come up with a winning score of 42 points. The best score of the day was one better by Bob Heathwood to win the Division 2 trophy. Fay Steel and Angie A. battled out the Ladies event with Fay taking the Christmas Cheer prize with 38 points. Thanks to Ray Johnson and Michael Schilling for Sponsoring Pin Shots on holes 9 and 15. It hasn’t happened for quite a while but there were 2 Skinners on the other Pin Shot holes. Ross Grant copped a bit of flak from his playing partners for having to go through discarded rubbish to find his ball after a very wayward shot.
Photos.
1. At least two spectators were interested in where Graham Wilson’s drive went, and one even applauded the shot.
2. Gerry shows the style that won him Division 1 today.
3. Rob and Charles made sure they followed the line of this shot.
4. Rosewood President Trevor played a great shot from here, but then he has practised it often enough.
5. Good to see new faces at our games.
6. Bob and Fay hadn’t yet heard that they were winners of their Divisions today.
The next game is Opening Day 2016 at Rosewood on Monday 25th January. The AGM will follow presentations. Additional information on Opening Day and the Annual General Meeting will be included in the “Notices” section of this website and in the QT, in January. The 2016 Membership Card containing the Game venues and Club Phone Numbers will be available from Opening Day.
That’s goodbye to 2015 for us and on reflection it must be acknowledged as a very successful year of Veteran’s golf. Special thanks to our Sponsors, the Queenslanders Credit Union, who again assisted with Championship trophies. The Committee members thank all players for their co-operation in ensuring that the programme ran smoothly and we now look forward to the challenges of the 2016 programme. Compliments of the season to all.
