As expected from the weather report and the overcast skies, the day turned out bleak and most players kept warm garments on for most of the day. Though showers threatened a number of times it wasn’t until nearly all groups had one or two holes to play that a 15 minute shower brought out the wet gear and umbrellas to enable players to finish out the Round.
The field was 78 (65 men and 13 ladies), a manageable number on the 9 hole Course, with no players having more than a 4 1/2 hour game. Hold-ups were minimal, helped by the use of call-up on the second hole.
The Course was in very good condition though the Fairways with patches poisoned to control weeds will probably not fully recover until the Spring. Most of the Greens were in top condition and provided top putting surfaces.
The fresh Bun Loaf and a boiling urn were appreciated as usual, and after play and a wet finish, the generous hot roast meal was just the tonic to put players in the mood for the drive home.
Again this week a returning player had a win when Jeff Murphy won Division 2 with 41 points. Graham Johnson’s 42 points was the best score of the day and it gave him the other men’s trophy. Practice at Gailes saw Gaye Geldard easily win the Ladies event. Local knowledge resulted in Nev Sippel winning two Pin Shots much to the delight of others in the group.
Photos.
1. There’s always plenty of catching up to do before the game.
2. Maurie didn’t drop the ball here. That’s where it landed. The ball got even on the next 9 by making it to the water.
3. The first time I have been challenged about having permission to photograph a group.
4. A time to smile as Gaye took a breather from telling them about her game today.
5. Another winner today and the second game in a row that he had a better score than Denise.
The next game is at Ipswich on Monday 6th July followed by the game at Beaudesert (run by the Beaudesert Vets) on Monday 20th July. They are both 8.30am Shotgun starts. The Timesheets for both games are now out.
