Event 4 – Laidley

A fine but cloudy day with the forecast of ‘a possible shower’ almost coming true, but instead the one really dark cloud passed over without producing any downfall. The humidity caused some discomfort when the welcome breeze eased but those in buggies were not really affected because of the motion of their vehicles. The mossies on the second hole had everyone reaching for their repellant cans.

The field was 82 (69 Men and 13 Ladies), a number which tested the holding capacity of the Course, but with the exception of the second hole, the field moved fairly well, with players finishing in between 4&3/4 and 5 hours. One new player was welcomed.

The Course was lush and the fairways a pleasure to play off. Once off though, the long rough often made searches for balls very difficult and then subsequent shots very difficult. The Greens were quite quick after being scarified, but putts held their line pretty well. They should be in top shape next visit.

A change from Burgers to Bangers and Mash this game, which was a shame as many expressed their preference for the established menu which offered a little bit of an option in meal selection.

Despite the difficulties the rough presented, those who avoided it scored well. and the two Rounds in the 40’s, Ken Davey’s 42 and John Ward’s 40, won them their Division trophies. Denise Johnson only needed 34 to take the ladies trophy. The Division 1 men will have a Pin Shot on hole 2 next game as two of them finished in the hole this time.

Photos.

1. The Fairways are lush, so why hit into the rough and leave yourself with this shot?

2. The rough isn’t too bad here, but Paul got to try the real stuff later on.

3. Graham, why worry about the camera. It’s silent, so just keep that head down and get on with the game.

4. Last week I asked where she was. Well here she is, but only as runner up today.

The next game is at Ipswich City on Monday 9th March. It is an 8.30am Shotgun start. The following game is Lowood on Monday 23rd March.
