Event 25 – Gailes

Another ideal day for golf without the cloud cover keeping out the warmth as in the last couple of games. The breeze was still there but most often shots had to be played with it or against it, so there was no excuse for the dreaded big slices encountered when hitting across the wind.

With minimal last-minute withdrawals, the final starting number was 85 (72 men and 13 ladies), down 14 from the early game this year. With players keen to get on with the game, none were late, and play got underway 10 minutes early.

The Course was in excellent condition and second shots were no problem if the ball was on the Fairway. In the rough it was a different matter because balls had to be played from where the came to rest, without the luxury of a Preferred Lie. The Greens had recovered from the problems experienced earlier in the year and were a delight to putt on. The Bunkers, with their very fine sand, were a different matter, and Course management strategies suggest that it would be wise to plan to avoid them in future games.

The pre-game welcoming drink and snack was again a Geldard success and was very much appreciated. The after-game sandwiches were fresh and well filled and met our needs admirably.

All three winners, Chris Petrohilos, Jan Stewart and Brian Yates, were well clear of the field with scores in the 40’s and the winners of the Men’s Pin Shots on the 12 Green, played great shots to get so close to the hole.

Photos.

1. Nice shot, Graham. You always did like an audience.

2. When balls hit trees they can finish in awkward spots for the next shot, as Maurie found out.

3. Were these two clearing out their new home or looking for balls?

4. Don’t look so worried, Brian. With shots like that one, it’s no wonder you won today.

5. Owen, the amazing thing was that you stayed put long enough to get your shot away and then didn’t fall over backwards.

The next game will be at Laidley on Monday 17th October. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun Start.
