Event 16 – Beaudesert

A few would have left in the dark to make sure they were on time, but Graham Wilson will sleep in for an extra half hour next time after being ill-advised on the travelling time this year. It was a great Winter’s Day with the very welcome sunshine contrasting the day to the bleakness of the last two venues.

The numbers of travellers was 71 players (61 Men and 10 Ladies) only 4 down on the original nominations. This was 16 more than last year and indicates that players will travel to play well presented and challenging Courses.

No preferred lies today as the Course was in top shape. Work progresses on the installation of additional irrigation pipes and those completed holes are already showing what the whole Course should be like in the future. Scoring wasn’t very easy, but this may have been partly because a lack of local knowledge. Next time there won’t be any excuses. And the Greens, well weren’t they just great, and a real pleasure to putt on.

The welcoming hot drinks were well received, and the scorecards were all prepared so there was no chance of playing off the wrong handicap. Some confusion occurred over game fees and lucky number draws and the absence of Pin Shots, but lunch orders were quickly filled so, all in all there was genuine conviviality while relaxing after the game.

The honours went to the host players, who though much smaller in numbers, made up for it in better scoring. Both Rhonda Williams and Peter Cook were runners-up and were awarded trophies. Eleven other players featured in the Ball Rundown. Fortunately, there was more success in the drawing of lucky scorecards which replaced the usual lucky numbers, even though some of those missed out because they did not remain for presentations.

2. Oh so close to disaster, but the ever-steady Ross put this difficult shot on to the Green.

3. Rhonda played well off the Tees all day.

5. Peter was leading until late when he was just pipped by one point. Ron was the best of the rest of us.

The next game is at Sandy Gallop on Monday 11th July. It is an 8.30am Shotgun Start.
