Event 17 – Gailes

Quite a chilly start to the day, with a heavy dew covering the Course, as the photo above shows. Thankfully, though, not a sign of the fog that made conditions almost impossible until 9 o’clock on Tuesday for the competitions throughout the south-east. It warmed up, the dew disappeared, and a fine day followed.

The final starting number was 108 (88 men and 20 ladies), a number comfortably accommodated on the longish Gailes Course. There were two new members who featured prominently in the Trophy presentations, as well as another three who have now qualified for the Championships at the end of August. Another ten will qualify by playing one further game at either Hatton Vale, Wolston Park or Karana Downs.

The Course was immaculately prepared and there were few excuses for low scores if players stayed on the best Fairways we have played this year, as well as avoided the very difficult wet bunkers, many of which tested even the lower handicappers, and then finally came to grips with the very true Greens which challenged everyone to judge the correct speed at which to propel the ball, which varied as the day progressed. For most though, it was a tough day at the office, but still thoroughly enjoyed if you didn’t mind a lower score.

Our much-appreciated Sponsors for the day, Gaye and Barry Geldard arrived early and made sure that everything was set up to ensure an easy registration, and a very welcome refreshment area. Thanks G & B. The chef put on an excellent reasonably priced lunch and topped off a great day

Well, it was new member day in Division 1, with Allan Swift’s brother John taking the trophy with 39 points from our other new member, Alex Blackett, with us from Bathurst for a couple of months. But the score of the day, 44 points, by far the best of the day was carded by Secretary/Treasurer Des Davies. The Ladies all tried very hard, but none could beat 34 points which four of them scored, and it was left to that great fallback decision maker, the Countback, to award the trophy to Pam Lane.

Photos.

1. A very refreshing start to the day’s play.

2. They are just wondering where on earth it will end up John.

3. I couldn’t resist this one. A picture of contentment and trust.

4. There were many others in this same situation today, Alice.

5. A section of the large number who happily remained for Presentations.

The next game will be at Hatton Vale on Monday 24th July. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun Start. The Timesheet is at Rosewood. Players going to Hatton Vale are asked to park in the carpark on the highway side of the new IGA store as it is not yet open.
