Event 21 – Ipswich City – 2018 Championships Round 1

Though the cold morning spell continued, by 8.30am a fine and comfortable day followed except for the very testing breeze which many believed freshened as they were about to play a shot into it.

The field was 116 (93 Men and 23 Ladies), a number 25 more than the corresponding game last year. There was a new member in that number, and everyone arrived in time to allow movement to the Tees for a hit-off on time.

Dry weather has taken its toll on this Course as well, and Preferred Lie was used on the Fairway in play and from bare patches on Fairways. The Greens have been nursed through this dry period and were in top shape.

The staff had the urn boiling by 7 o’clock and a warm drink went down very well. The lunch variety is now very good and was much enjoyed also.

The two scores of the day were both 64 nett and were returned by Alison Standing and Des Hastie. The rest will have to play well to catch them. Of course, the challenge of winning a Day 2 trophy will still be quite a challenge also. Since Stableford points have to be recorded to enter the results into Golflink, some can use this as a challenge to score top stableford points. John Osborne was on target with two Pin Shots and Joy Wilson got a lucky break by hitting a marker and deflecting nearer the hole. The shot of the day must have been Ray Johnson’s approach on hole 2 which resulted in an Eagle.

Photos.

1. This a view of hole 17, just as Ken Rogers lined up his approach. He hit the Green but no birds.

2. Gary took great care with this shot and was suitably rewarded.

3. Jan Stewart wasn’t going to retrieve this one, but good Samaritan, Tom, helped out.

4. It took some doing, but finally all agreed to smile for the camera.

5. Lindsay wasn’t quite sure about what the motive for this shot was, but really a last photo was needed to post here.

The next game, the 2nd Round of the Championships, is at Ipswich City on Monday 27th August. It is an 8.30am Shotgun start. Players who are not involved in the Championships are welcome to play in the Competition of the day. The following game is at Esk on Monday 3rd September.
