8.25am and time to leave the warmth of the Clubhouse. By now the sun is shining brightly and ushering another excellent day for golf, with just a hint of a sneaky cool breeze for the first six holes. The report of Drone activity around the Course was of no great concern as they left our golf balls alone.
There were 77 players (65 men and 12 ladies), up 4 on last year’s number, after there had been 84 on the Timesheet on Saturday. There were three more returning players in this number, two after absence for some time.
The Course was in very good condition in most of the areas where it was planned for balls to land, but invariably many shots went astray and resulted in becoming lost for ever. Most Greens had responded well to recent repair efforts but it may be some time before they are all back to their usual high standard.
The new caterers gave every co-operation with our lunch and refreshment requirements and have given a base from which to discuss future game requirements.
Another Vets game following Club Championships, and while the Tee markers could be easily changed, we experienced some very challenging Pin placements. It comes as no surprise then that scoring was particularly difficult. Helen Gilbert won another trophy with 30 points on countback, Bernie Moore was the scorer of the day with 37, just one ahead of the other winner, Miguel Cufi. We were very thankful to the Club for sponsoring an additional three Pin Shots and to Errol O’Farrell for his three Front Nine Trophies.
Photos.
1. With the 7 o’clock temperature at one degree, the wisest choice was to be wrapped up even though the air conditioner was on in here.
2. Local lad, Alan Jones, shows how lefties should play the 2nd hole.
3. This was a common scene on the dreaded 8th Green, one standing waiting while the others tried to recover from some near impossible location.
4. A whole new situation at the Club today with new caterers providing a very pleasant menu from which to choose.
5. Allan and John were two of those referred to in Photo 3 above, but were quite relaxed about their troubles afterwards.
The next game is at Hatton Vale on Monday 23rd July. It will be an 8.30am Shotgun start. The following game is at Gailes on 30th July.
